First Blog Ever

A blog.

Retirement after 33 years of teaching and 58 years of life hopefully requires thinking in new ways and doing new things. Interestingly, 58 year old brains can feel content and resistant to all things new.

I’m definitely trying to confront this reality. I’m enjoying learning Spanish on Duolingo, I’m often introduced to new platforms (such as this) by my son, I made a new friend this summer, I am eating differently and I will continue to add to this list.

My new friendship developed as a result of a couple of feral cats who decided to take residence underneath my front porch. My neighbor and I both took an interest in these cats. We fed them, created warmer shelters in the dead of winter, and dug a tunnel from the porch to their food dish when we received 40 inches of snow in March.

My neighbor is 68 years old. She moved into the house two years ago, and we had only exchanged a few words over that time. But the cats brought us together and now we have attended a couple of social events together and regularly text.

I guess one doesn’t know for sure what outcomes an experience will provide. I’m looking forward to broadening my experiences and learning whatever lessons come my way.
